PyWeek - Warm-up weekWhen does everyone want to start?I was thinking the 18th-25th, so that there is a week between the end of warm-ups and the start of theme voting. Any objections? Whenever we do it, I think we should start throwing out theme suggestions :) My ideas: 1: Night and Day 2: A clash of minuscule proportions I had some other ones that were better, but I've forgotten them now. We could also use one of the unused ones from the previous competitions, and that could be really cool :) — RB[0] on 2007/08/04 03:47 of Hole in the Head Studios - We might have lost our minds... Just start the warm-up now and finish it when theme voting starts :)By RB[0] on 2007/08/04 14:13:
Yeah, that's what I had been hoping for, personally, but quite a few of the other ppl who are interested in it wanted just a week *shrug*.I don't really care, but, as I don't have a whole lot of time before pyweek open for a wram-up, the longer it runs the better for me ;)

I do prefer a week, but either is fine by me. I just don't want to get it too close to the start of the challenge, so at least we should finish when the theme voting starts (so we have a week to play each others games). My suggestion is to start now and set around day 18-19 (about two weeks from now) as a non-strict deadline. As for the themes, any is fine, something new and random preferably. Just pick something randomly, like the name of an episode of a tv show, or an album title, or the name of some crazy icecream flavor.
(I tried it on the tv show Heroes, and I randomly picked its #5 episode (based on the number of the pyweek, #5), "Hiro's", but it's not a good name. But there are other interesting names, like "Parasite", "Unexpected", "Seven Minutes to Midnight", "One Giant Leap". You can pick one of these at random (pick a random number between 1 and 4) or choose some other list to generate a theme.)
By Tee on 2007/08/04 22:24:
By the way, I'm also fine with the deadline being on the start of the theme voting, like Richard suggested.By RB[0] on 2007/08/04 23:28:
Okay heres a random theme, Andromeda episode 35 : "Lava and Rockets" :Por, "become an expression of your gift" I found that one looking for a random episode of the simpsons, got a yoga site instead *shrug* :)
"Parasite for sore eyes" - found on imdb, unknown tv series.
Personally, I don't like most of the ones from Heroes, except for "Seven minutes to midnight", as the rest are too specific or generic or short(as opposed to a phrase) ;)

Well, someone just pick one. I'm waiting. :)By RB[0] on 2007/08/05 02:05:
ok, from irc, the random theme is "e=mc2". Competiton begins now, and runs until 00:00 UTC 8-18-2007By fydo on 2007/08/05 02:07:
Yeah! Go team! :DBy Tee on 2007/08/05 02:33:
Tough theme. I have no clue on what to build from that. :PBy ProfessorJ on 2007/08/06 06:32:
Excellent theme, relatively speaking... hehe...By kiba on 2007/08/07 01:53:
hmm..relative timeBy fydo on 2007/08/08 21:01:
Hmm, I wonder what the world would be like if the theory of relativity was E=MC2 instead of E=MC^2 ... ;)I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a warm-up game completed in time. I might just spend a little time an polish up my last warm-up game for general consumption. (not for the warm-up compo, of course)
Good luck to everyone else in the warm-up compo though! :D

fydo: If that were true, by my calculations antillopes would become green and computerized mailboxes would own the world. ;) (Actually, although I don't know much of physics, much less relativity, the left hand side unit wouldn't match with the right hand one so that equation wouldn't be an equation...)Anyway, I have an idea for the warmup. Whether I'll be able to complete it or not is another story. fydo, what was your last warmup game?
By paulreiners on 2007/08/09 19:03:
Right. The units on the left wouldn't match the units on the right.By paulreiners on 2007/08/09 19:04:
Never mind. That is what Tee said.By RB[0] on 2007/08/11 01:54:
Errg, my team won't be able to finish anything for the warm-up.Just when it started work kicked up for me. The rest of the team has created some nice graphics and we came up with a good idea, but I won't have time to implement it at all :/
Hopefully work will die down by pyweek time, but we'll have to see...
Good luck to everyone else though :)

I'm new around here, but I like the "A clash of minuscule proportions" theme. As for a suggestion what about "lollipops and gumdrops"? Something just random to remind people of their youth... Might be tricky too.By Tee on 2007/08/15 21:08:
Welcome hawkerm. :)Actually, the theme was already picked. From the comments of this thread:
"By RB[0] on 2007/08/05 02:05:

I'm not going to finish in time, but since it's just a warmup, I'll keep slowly working on it until it's done (or until I give up).
By Cthulhu32 on 2007/08/19 04:29:
oh whoops, didn't realize it ended 8-18, didn't see any finished games :) I was just going to work on mine until we started voting on the themes. I am taking it at a very leisurely pace. I'll upload it somewhere when its done.By eugman on 2007/08/19 13:13:
Been working on recoding my pyweek2 entry into something with more game. Also merging everything into one program. Probably going to merge pyweek 5 entry with it too when I'm done.

Yeah, I think everyone is taking it pretty easy :)I'm interested to see what games people are working on though, cuz it sounded like there were a lot of people who were doing it this time :)
By Tigga on 2007/08/19 13:35:
I don't want to waste my creativity, so I'm just fiddling with my PyWeek 4 entry, and another game I've made since.
